Repair or replace guide
There is no universal age or price rule that decides whether to repair or replace an A/C system. Start with an in-person diagnosis, then compare the system’s condition, comfort, reliability, repair history, property needs, available equipment, and the homeowner’s priorities.
Start with the system’s current condition
Ask what failed, what diagnostic evidence supports that finding, whether airflow or ducts affect the result, and what the proposed repair would change.
Multiple faults can produce similar symptoms, so a symptom or equipment age by itself is not a complete condition assessment.
- Current finding: the diagnosed fault and the evidence used to identify it.
- Scope: the affected controls, airflow path, drainage, refrigerant circuit, equipment, or ducts.
- Repair path: the proposed work, the result it is intended to restore, and what remains unknown.
Safety boundary: A repair-or-replace worksheet is not a repair procedure. Do not open panels, test wiring, connect gauges, handle refrigerant, or inspect internal moving parts; ask a qualified technician to document the diagnosis.
Compare comfort, reliability, and repair history
Use the following observations as comparison inputs, not automatic replacement triggers.
- Comfort: rooms that remain uneven, moisture concerns, airflow differences, or a new unusual sound.
- Reliability: interruptions, repeated cycling, and whether the same symptom returns.
- Repair history: prior findings, components changed, and whether those repairs resolved the reported problem.
- Operating context: changes in energy use, thermostat patterns, occupancy, or the property since the system was selected.
What a replacement conversation should include
A replacement proposal should respond to the home and the verified condition of the current system. A larger unit or a higher efficiency label does not replace a home-specific evaluation.
- System sizing based on the home’s actual characteristics rather than a rule of thumb.
- Duct condition, leakage, and airflow requirements.
- Compatible indoor and outdoor equipment, controls, and refrigerant design.
- Written model numbers, work scope, efficiency ratings, warranty information, and schedule.
- How installation checks will confirm airflow, charge, controls, and operation.
Questions to ask before deciding
- What diagnosis has been verified, and what evidence supports it?
- If I repair the system, what work is proposed and what uncertainty remains?
- If I replace it, how will the property’s cooling needs and system size be determined?
- How will ducts, airflow, moisture control, and installation quality be addressed?
- Which compatible equipment is available, and what are the practical tradeoffs?
- How do my priorities for comfort, reliability, budget, and disruption affect the choice?
